Malmo Democracity - web application for dialogue ahead of the EU election

Together with BBDO Nordic and the City of Malmo, we at Itiden created a web application aimed at increasing voter turnout ahead of the 2024 EU election. The purpose of the application was not only to raise awareness of the EU election, but also to improve understanding of how an election works.

The result was a site where visitors and partners of the City of Malmo could create their own polls and let the public make their voices heard in them.

What we built

We created a web application where visitors and residents could safely create users with SMS verification. Once logged in, users could create their own polls. To cast a vote, users did not need to be signed in or have a registered account.

We also built a feature that lets users share a direct link to a poll via a QR code generated from a print template. To prevent inappropriate content, we added a reporting function that allows users to send reports to moderators at the City of Malmo. To make moderation simple, we installed Nova, a database admin interface where moderators can remove content considered inappropriate or in violation of the rules.

Process

BBDO Nordic produced wireframes early in the project, which made development easier because the functionality was clearly specified together with a flowchart. A finished design was then delivered and could be applied. We at Itiden also did preliminary work to choose a suitable and cost-effective SMS verification service to avoid unexpected costs for the feature.

Weekly check-ins and continuous testing made it possible to meet the tight delivery schedule, and the campaign launched on time.
