Itiden – Case Synonymer

Synonymer.se is one of Sweden's most visited websites and is used daily by thousands of people. By engaging its users,the content on Synonymer.se has continued to grow, and the site is now a natural part of many people's everyday lives. We at Itiden have been responsible for the development of Synonymer.se and, since the collaboration started, have done a great job of technically modernizing the site and expanding it with new features.

What we have done

We were commissioned to completely rebuild the site from scratch, while preserving the design. This was because the site suffered from a large technical debt, which made it both risky and difficult to further develop the codebase. The result was that we at Itiden built a technically modern site that is easy to develop, fast to load, and stable for the visitor, regardless of the time of day and server load. In addition, a great deal of effort was made to simplify the admin part of the site, which has made it easier to administer for their editors and administrators. Among the new features since we took over development are the suggestion feature, which allows users to create their own contributions, which other users can then vote on to be published.

Process

The technical renovation began with a comprehensive mapping of all the site's templates, functions, and content types. This was followed by a flowchart of the entire database, all in order to optimize the new setup and ensure that nothing was missed. Since it was such a complex and large site, we worked in our own sprints where the client could continuously test the features that were being built up. This, together with frequent check-ins, resulted in a smooth and painless transition from the old to the new.
