Redesign of Synonymer.se with a new AI feature

Synonymer.se is one of Sweden's most visited websites. After working together for the past five years, it was time to refresh the site, add some new features, and introduce an AI service that helps visitors with everything related to the Swedish language.

Clean, modern, and clear design

We lightened up the design by giving the sections more breathing room, more space, and fewer framed boxes. In addition, the site now has a more modern typeface and a new ad placement to make the ads feel less intrusive.

AI with all of Synonymer.se as its brain

AI is being used more and more often by everyday users. To give visitors the opportunity to ask questions about the Swedish language, we built an AI chat in which the AI has access to Synonymer's entire database and, consequently, all of its content.

Statamic for creating engaging articles

By building categories and templates in the Statamic CMS, the team can now publish language articles covering everything from broad topics to finer details related to the Swedish language.

Process

Work to replace the design and functionality through small changes had been ongoing for some time. However, it was now time to make a larger change and modernize the site, as well as add features that not only increase the value for visitors but also give Synonymer the opportunity to remain the obvious destination for everything related to the Swedish language.

To achieve this without creating confusion or making visitors feel lost, we retained the basic structure of the menu, word pages, and homepage.

To make the site easier to take in, we created more space between the blocks, with clearer typefaces for headings and the ability to add blocks with related content in the middle of a word page. We also created the opportunity for Synonymer's editors to publish articles covering interesting topics, which are often connected to different themes or areas of focus. To support this, we set up a unique "collection" in the Statamic CMS, making the content easy to manage and edit.

The beginning of something new—AI makes its entrance ✨

With the arrival of AI, it is more important than ever for Synonymer to provide content and features that cannot be found anywhere else. The goal is to offer a simple and enjoyable way to access the content that has been built up and enriched over decades, with credibility at the center. To make this possible, we built an AI chat that uses all of Synonymer as its primary source of language knowledge. This means that all of that history and credibility can now be accessed by talking to an AI in natural language and asking language-related questions.

Right now, the AI functionality on the site is still in its early stages and will be adjusted and improved over time. It also creates new opportunities for future development and features, which we look forward to exploring together with the team at Synonymer.
